historically what events may have affected your family or ancestors?
Some of the first that I am aware of were those who immigrated to America.
The eruption of Mt Tambora in Indonesia and other volcanic eruptions in 1814 and 1815 caused a very cold summer in New England. Volcanic dust was blown high into the atmosphere and reflected the suns rays. Crops failed and livestock died. Many people including some of my ancestors, moved to Ohio to escape the cold.
Wars and religion were also major influences. One ancestor lost his leg at the age of 14 at the Second Battle of Bull Run. He received some land in the west as compensation. His brother was captured and died at Andersonville Prison after it was liberated. Another ancestor was partially paralyzed from wounds received in the Civil War. Unfortunately, the Indian removals caused some to move west.
One Puritan ancestor was repeatedly fined for refusing to persecute Quakers. He eventually declared himself dead and left his property to his children, so he would not lose it all and became a Quaker. His grandfather, a Puritan preacher left America and returned to England after he was accused of being a “free thinker” and excommunicated. One woman said to be a sister of one of my ancestors was accused of being a witch and was killed. Some Quaker ancestors were “disowned for marrying out of unity” and moved west.
One ancestor wrote about her experiences when she arrived in New Amsterdam. She said that they traded with the Indians, who were gentle as lambs.
